Top 10 Games of 2010

10)

MAG is quite possibly the most ambitious console game so far in our history of gaming.  No other console game can say "we have an online only game where 256 players can play in the same room."  Zipper Interactive always creates new and exciting games and with no lag in any games, I got high hopes for SOCOM 4.  For 9 maps, 3 game modes, I give the game at launch a 7/10.

9)

The Sly Collection is the second 1st-party PS2 HD remake collection for the PS3, following the God of War Collection.  I myself have never played the Sly games back on PS2 and thanks to Sony remaking the games for PS3, I got to it.  Some of the best platforming this side of Ratchet & Clank and Jak & Daxter.  I game is also a bargain, $39.99 for 3 full games helps rack this one up to an 8/10.

8)

This really shouldn't be on this list as RE5 technically came out last year but was re-released this past March.  It came MOVE-enabled to use the PS Move and NavCon for motion controls and it had 2 DLC-levels, 6 costumes and 8 new characters for Mercenaries.  It felt like a whole new game and led to great co-op action.  8.5/10

7)

Call of Duty: Black Ops is the latest in the annual release of the COD milking by Activision.  Funnily, it really didn't feel like a COD game.  It is THAT good and makes me happy to know that change can occur.  The story mode is epic with great voice acting by Sam Worthington, Ed Harris and Gary Oldman.  Co-op is great in Zombies with 2 well-designed levels.  MP is the same as always with annoying little kids and wannabe-gangstas who use the internet to be racists with no repercussions.  9/10

6)

Fallout New Vegas is the follow-up to 2008 GOTY Fallout 3.  It isn't done by Bethesda for development this time and it can be seen.  It truly feels like Fall out 3.5 but it's not a bad thing.  Amazing writing and addicting gameplay contribute to this game's longevity as well as the huge location of the Mojave desert.  The game is plagued however by a multitude of bugs and glitches and while there have been patches there's still been problems.  9/10

5)

The first GOW on PS3, FINALLY!  No lie, I loved the first 2 GOW's so much on PS2...and yet I NEVER beat them.  It took the GOW Collection to come out to finally beat them and after playing through GOW 3...I realize the story is amazing, gameplay is simple to pickup and the graphics are beast.  I gotta say though the game is short as hell and there's several Gods and Goddesses and Titans missing...9/10

4)

When this was first announced, I had a bad feeling about it.  It didn't continue sequentially and instead is a spinoff.  It also hyped it as having multiplayer.  These are things that makes the game feel like it'll be a bad game.  Low-and-behold I was proven wrong.  It is without-a-doubt the best Assassin's Creed game.  Shortest but has the most to do within Rome.  The story is the best and it has one of the coolest endings and mind-boggling ones I've ever witnessed.
9.5/10

3)

Heavy Rain is a game you get once a generation on the consoles.  Quantic Dreams (the developers) did a game with the same feeling last generation called Indigo Prophecy.  It was bleak, it had story, great acting and it felt like a movie that you could control to one of many endings.  Heavy Rain builds off of this premise and perfects it up until some of the voicing.  Heavy Rain has the best faces in gaming history.  The desperation in Ethan Mars' face and eyes as he searches for his kidnapped son, the exoticism in Madison Paige's demeanor as she resorts to low actions to help find Ethan's son, the addiction boiling FBI Agent Norman Jayden's eyes as he cannot stop until he catches the killer, and the drive in the voice of P.I. Scott Shelby.  This game is perfect and drives home a message, "What would you do to save one you love?" 10/10

2)

A true surprise-hit of the year.  No one can really say that there's a 3D Castlevania that all the fans agree is moderately good.  Not until Lords of Shadow hit this past year.  MercurySteam took the concept and amplified it with help from Kojima Productions (of Metal Gear Solid fame).  They took the controls and gameplay of God of War, the epic boss battles of Shadow of the Colossus and the platforming of Uncharted and tied it into an epic story akin to a MGS.  The locale in the game is some of the most beautifully rendered I've seen and Gabriel Belmont is a character that you root on no matter of the sins he's caused in his past.  The game also has the greatest post-credits scene that sent shivers down my body.  10/10

1)

Red Dead Redemption was deemed to be good from the first trailer.  It was hyped as GTA in the West, and that it was.  But it was more.  Your character wasn't an animal, a gangster or a low-life.  He was a family-man trying to get back his wife and son and his life.  He had to work for the feds to hunt down his old gang as his family is held hostage.  The acting and music drove this home to make it feel like Clint Eastwood was directing.  The game also has a wide-world and the best horse physics since Gun.  The MP is great and addicting and the DLC keeps on coming and is well worth the money.  Especially the zombie co-op.  The ending isn't cliched either and I appreciate that the game tries something different and though others might hate it, I loved it and wish more developers would go a different route in their games.

Top 10 Films of 2010

1)

Inception was a true mind-puzzle.  It kept you guessing all film long, and left the film's ending open!  Great acting by an all-star cast, amazingly orchestrated score, one of the best scripts ever, and one of the only "original" films of the year that wasn't a reboot/remake/reimagining, sequel/prequel, or adaptation.

2)

The cast list says it all.  The greatest action stars of our time all in one movie as a tribute to the greatest action films from the 80's and 90's.  Jet Li axe kicking someone's head backwards, Jason Statham beating up some punks on a basketball court, a showdown at a church involving Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis and Sylvester Stallone, and a USAS-12 auto shotty used down a hallway should be enough for anyone to go watch it.

3)

Martin Scorsese and Leo DiCaprio are together again.  Destined to have NEVER failed together this movie may seem predictable at first but the way it unfolds keeps you guessing.  DiCaprio shines again like always and the landscape of the prison and island are a sight to behold.

4)

I had low hopes for this one.  How can anyone tell me this is better then Toy Story 3?  Then I watched it and felt the same way.  This isn't like Shrek or Kung-Fu Panda.  It's better and tells a tale of a boy who isn't wanted/liked in his own tribe and in the end turns out to be their hero.  A coming-of-age film done differently with dragons and in CGI.  Must-watch!

5)

Most movie fans hate the SAW films.  They call it torture-porn.  Funny enough, those same fans have the attention span of a brain-dead snail.  If you actually took your mind out of the gore (which was non-existent before the 3rd film) you can see a story that strings out from the first film to the seventh.  It always continues and always has the same actors along.  This is the finale of the series (or so they said) and in my opinion it concluded well.  Yes it left questions open, but that's the point, use your own imagination and interpret it as you can deem possible from the facts bestowed upon it.  It was probably the best SAW score, and the most brutal and it as well has the most human character in Bobby Dagan.

6)

Kill Bill meets Spider-man defines this flick.  Nicholas Cage at his best is also enough to hear to know this is a must watch film.  It's gory and action filled like Kill Bill but goes through the motions of becoming a hero like in Spider-Man.  Chloe Moretz has a huge future ahead of her from this movie and Aaron Johnson as well.  Mathew Vaughn directing this has me hyped for X-Men: First Class, if you love comics, watch this movie!

7)

If you make a movie with the word Predator in it, and it's not the original, you know it's gonna be sub-par.  Predators changes it all as a direct sequel to the original and it plays on all the same strings as it.  It is essentially an homage to the film as it has the jungle and even the same character stereotypes.  The movie gets you going and ends up being satisfying especially Topher Grace's character.  If you love the Predator but haven't liked the last few movies he was in (AVP, or AVP:R) then you'll love this one.

8)

Personal feelings aside, Mel Gibson is a phenomenal actor and director.  This movie is essentially an R-Rated version of Taken or a new take of Death Sentence.  Mel's character has his family torn from him and he uses his old knowledge of being a cop to get to the bottom of the case that his old precinct can't solve.  He isn't out for justice, he's out of revenge and nothing will keep this old dog down.

9)

Finally, we have a Resident Evil movie taking plot points from the games, characters from the games, guns from the games and even locations from the games.  It took four movies but we finally have one that looks like the games it was inspired by.  Only difference is it's an action film not a horror :-/.  But it's not all bad.  It is clearly inspired by Resident Evil 5 which was more action-esque than horror and Albert Wesker showed true ownage up until the abrupt ending.  Check the credits for a surprise scene and be hyped for the next film!

10)

If this wasn't thought of off of REPO! The Genetic Opera, then great minds do think alike.  This is the story of repo men who repossess items that are behind payments.  However in this film these "items" are actually body organs.  A sick-twisted futuristic city with top-notch action throughout.  Ending kinda sucked but the lead-up was a fun ride.

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception

Entertainment Weekly has shown the exclusive premiere to the much sought after sequel to Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.  Not much is known about the title, but what is known is sure to whet anyone's appetite.

We will join Nathan Drake and his old time buddy Sully as they search for the "Atlantis of the Sands," in the Arabian deserts.  Locations are to be from England all the way to the Arabian Desert.  The game is using the stories of T.E. Lawrence as a guide.  Naughty Dog is working hard at making competitive online and cooperative play a bigger focus of the franchise.  This is great news for us fans.  We are to expect more hand-to-hand combat as well, I'm guessing some knife kills for stealth parts and maybe even sword fights akin to Aladdin/Prince of Persia?

To close this up, Uncharted 3 is to be another hit in Sony's list of 3D enabled games.  This just might be the reason to get those expensive 3D tv's but it might not be an option at least until they drop in price.  Here's hoping it'll be more affordable by Fall, 2011 in time for Uncharted 3's release.  If you want more, catch the Spike TV Video Game Awards tonight at 8:00 p.m. Eastern on Spike TV.  The world premiere trailer and look at Uncharted 3 will be there!

For concept art, head to the PlayStation Blog.  They got a short 30 second teaser and 3 concept images.

Welcome!

Welcome fellow PlayStation fans, this here is my first blog and I am here to give an insight to my fixation in the PlayStation world.  Bare with me if you will, as I'm still getting a hold of this blogging.  I don't have much to add right now, but tomorrow I shall add my thoughts on the newly revealed Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception!

Also, don't forget that the Video Game Awards are tomorrow night at 8:00 p.m. est on Spike TV.  Catch it for 13 world premieres and support your favorite games of the 2010 year.
